DDI is a non-profit and multi-site organization established to provide therapeutic intervention and to address the special education needs of kids with autism. DDI’s success since its inception in 1961 is partly due to the organization’s commitment to research that leads to the development of resources contributing to the well-being of the people it serves.

DDI’s commitment to research was further emphasized through the creation of the Research Review Committee (RRC), a group responsible for governing the practice of research at DDI. Proposals for research may come from within the organization or from stakeholders in academic institutions or agencies. According to the policies and procedures set forth by the RRC, the researchers become accountable to DDI. All research efforts must be consistent with DDI’s mission and values.

RRC’s policies and procedures are based on the principles of protecting human subjects involved in research as provided by The Belmont Report. These principles include respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. Based on the Belmont Report, RRC is responsible for protecting the rights and welfare of the participants in any DDI research.
